Try using 7-zip (www.7-zip.org), it can list and extract files from MSI, and if some of them will have identical names, you can not only overwrite, but also rename them from archiver itself.

Use instEdit to open your MSI file, check tables : Binary, _Streams, ISSetupFile, to find your dll.

All of DLLs used for serial check are in Binary and _Streams table, this DLLs may not named with your desired dll, you need to unpack them (Export table in instedit) and test each one with ollydbg to verify and find your dll.

How about superman living inside the SuperOrca tool? :)

SuperOrca from "Pantaray Research Ltd." is a direct replacement to the "Orca" MSI Editor from Microsoft. SuperOrca may be used to examine and modify an MSI database in order to distribute a new MSI package. When QSetup delivers an MSI Editor, SuperOrca delivers an MSI Database Editor and let you discover the depth of MSI Database.

I cannot say if it can help in this particular problem but i am using Scriptlogic MSI Studio Professional Edition to extract files from MSI installer, then replace files inside and repack back to MSI

Of course it requires few mods to work, but result at the end is satisfactory.

Have you tried using InstEd, I've had plenty of luck with this over the years.
