I couldn't disagree more. Tools are tools. They can help, but they can also be a huuuuge crutch. You need to understand the OS, the language being used by said application being reversed, the compiler used to compile said application, and of course, the low-level language to when debugging it. That takes a LOT of reading and understanding. This means you need "to read", in order to get a baseline to start using the "tools" you are talking about.
