Thanking
Given the saying Thankyou and the removal of the Thanks system, how do I now thank a poster?. I know there is now a "Like" thing, but liking somebody and thanking them have nothing in common at all. I say thankyou to people many times each day, but I do not tell them I like them, how can I if I do not even know them?.
Please reintroduce a system of thanking posters. It seems a great shame that we are in a small minority of forums that do not have that facility. Git |
i also got warning by saying thank you :( , i havent seen any forum or site like this who gives punishment giving appreciation
|
totaly agree with Git

I want to add something. After new rules i downgraded friend member. I repect that, there is no problem for me. rules are rules. After then I try hard to meet the requirements of being family member. But i can't. I need 4 more rep but members gave me thanks instead of rep for my useful posts. After new rules i got 3 rep and 14 thanks (or likes). but I can't be family member.
Finally there are two positive buttons. but one is more important than the other. I hope mods will find a solution to this duality. |
you have one rep from me mate:D
|
Dear Codeman,
I gave you one reputation point just now. So, one more rep and you will be upgraded. I think it not far now. Dear Git, When we click [Liked], it means we [Liked] the information/message he posted. |
So how do we thank the poster please?.
As an example, how can I thank you for posting your message above?. I don't like the contents of the post, I just want to thank you for posting the reply. This situation arises for me several times a day, I am sure I am not alone. Git |
Yea, maybe we should rename the 'Like' button to 'Thank You' instead. And rename the 'Reputation +1' to 'Add reputation' (+1 is really confusing since it's also used by Google Plus instead of like).
Anyways to answer your question Git: it's just a minor subtlety in language in my opinion, for now use the 'Like' button if you just want to thank someone for posting. If you feel like someone should be upgraded for his post, use the 'Reputation +1' button. For members that are Family or higher already, it doesn't matter. The intention from the forum staff was that Family+ members could give reputation to the 'Friends' so they can become 'Family'. The Like button is the replacement for the 'Thank you' button, but it went a little weird. |
Git said it! :)
Sometimes it's really hard to push "Like" and don't like it! I'm nearly 10 years here and I know, it's hard to lead a board like this. No admin and moderator should miff my words, but JMI did it in a unique good way. I never ever postet "thank you" for climbing up an imaginary ledder for getting VIP or something like that, I just was going my way in this forum, like in other boards too. But last time I feel haunted with new rules... :p Do this, do that not and so on. I feel coming up the time, you may throw out me and so I worry about... |

Thanks for all the discussion above.
We will use the two buttons as following soon. [Add Reputation] [Thanks] In the beginning, I thought [Thanks] could mean nothing but just an ending of a sentence. So, I chose [Like] instead of [Thanks]. Also, as I explained before, [Thanks] gave one reputation point in the past. Newbie user can collect enough [Thanks] to be promoted to VIP by a [Happy New Year] or [Happy Birthday] post. I know this is a mistake of promotion rule. So, we tried to make changes to avoid such kind of mistake. |
I don't understand, what's the difference between a button written with "Like" and "Thanks" If the aim is still the same, similarly with "Reputation + 1" and "Add" Reputation, Why change the text?. I understand that what is being considered and decided by administrators is to improve the Forum in all its threads, however I just don't see the need to change texts of buttons each time a member complains.

someone don like but want to thank:D

Aaron and I are not native speaker of English.
So, sometimes we choose phrases which are not proper or confusing. We hope old friends like you could help and explain for us when there is any misunderstanding. |
I did not even know until recently that the 2 were even different.
@ZeNiX, I understand :) You and aaron are CN, right? I can help you, maybe another mod like mr.exodia will verify what I say... We will use the two buttons as following soon. [Add Reputation] [Thanks] Also, as I explained before, [Thanks] gave one reputation point in the past. Newbie user can collect enough [Thanks] to be promoted to VIP by a [Happy New Year] or [Happy Birthday] post. I know this is a mistake of promotion rule. So, we tried to make changes to avoid such kind of mistake. I did not know about these "New year" and "Happy Birthday" posts... where can I learn more? I think the change to Add Reputation and Thanks is a good one but still needs further clarification for new members. As an english native speaker, it just doesn't make sense to have a seperate button for "Thanks" and "reputation" -- by your description, Thanks is more valuable than reputation, but it doesn't seem to be working like that..? My suggestion is to keep "Add Reputation" -- remove "Thanks" - merge them. Reputation == thanks. |
The problem is that some people has a habit of clicking [Thanks] on every post he reads. In that case, reputation point become useless.
That is why we split into [reputation] and [thanks]. |
I see, but the differentiation for the rest of us who do not hit "thanks" for every post is slim to none. I did not know that one was worth more than the other or that one provided something that the other did not. Just saying :)

There is also too enough confusion associated with this button for me to not use it.
1) The button is marked Thanks. 2) I think if you press it it adds a Like, not a Thanks 3) The button calls post_groan.php with parameter post_groan_add. When does it add a Groan? 4) 'Like' is not just a verb, it has many uses as follows : To a native speaker, 'like' is a very weak word : "I would like to go for a walk". "Q. Want a cigarette? - A. if you like". "I would like to go to bed now" "He smells like Grandpa Simpson" "I would like to go shopping" "He was like, cool man" "Looks like it is going to rain" Just some of the 10 different way 'like' is used in the English language. Git |
@Git: "I like your post!"
Anyways, the 'Thanks' button is meant to be the new 'Thank you' button. It was placed instead of the groan and some texts were renamed because this BB doesn't support it directly (I think). Just some things remain unchanged it seems :) |
Is this supposed to motivate more people in generating more high quality content? I liked the old way when you were transitioned by staff, gave it a sense of eliteness, in the good sense (also it was what motivated me to try to join).

We do not have to judge and press [Thank] and [Reputation] to each post which might be useful. For example, If the post is only useful to me and useless to other people, I give [Thanks] or [Reputation]. If the post is useful to 100 people but useless to me, I do not give [Thanks] or [Reputation]. |
Dear Git,
Please allow me to say that this is a forum for reversing, not for English teaching. So, our idea is that we make a system working and we try to understand how it works. I know there are many meanings of [Like]. I also know there are many different meanings of [Thanks] and [Please]. But I believe it will become not so important as long as we we all understand what they are. And I am almost 100% sure that no matter what we do, we are unable to make it 100% perfect. Just like that there is no perfect coding/programming. |
IMO there is no problem to use 2 positive buttons if the users know the difference between them. So the problem is not the buttons themselves but how we use them. We have to know that reputation button is more important (bigger / better / etc.) than thanks button, at least for now.
|
One more difference is that [Friend] can click [Thanks].
Family and higher can click both. Which means, Friends cannot give reputation, but they can thank. And, yes, we need help of our old members to explain to those who are confused. |

I'll shutup now. Git |
The 'Thanks' button still needs some fixes. Maybe an admin and just S&R this in some php files? I think everything will be good then.

when is last time board upgraded
|
long time ago, it is still v3 I think. Not sure about the security updates really. You probably know how that can mess things up ;)
|
maybe its time for upgrade but that is just mine opinion
|
Dear Git and mr.exodia,
I think I see the problem now. When we click [Thanks], it showns: The Following User Says [Like] You to... Where [Like] should be changed back to [Thank]. Right? |
These should be changed to 'Thank' instead of 'Like':
http://i.imgur.com/yMIzbBi.png Also when you hover over the 'Thank' button it says 'Like' as the tooltip. |
That is what I believe, yes. It should also be "Thanks given" not "Thank gave" if possible.
Git |
So, also, we have to change these?
Thanked Gave --> Thanks Given Thanked Rcvd --> Thanks Rcvd Rept. Gave --> Rept. Given In the beginning, I thought it would be confusing of: One was given, or one has given. So, I chose [Gave] instead of Given. |
The tooltips for the buttons are still showing old strings.
If you hover over 'Add Reputation' it says: Rept. Given If you hover over 'Thanks' it says: Like |
