HL2SRM utility, upgrades HASP HL firmware

at Aladdin's site:

HASP HL firmware update utility
This utility updates the firmware of HASP HL keys from version 2.16 to version 3.21 and enables HASP SRM functionality.

Note: Before clicking Apply Update, ensure that only one HASP HL key is connected to the computer.

Do NOT disconnect the key during the update process.
The update process may take a few minutes.

HASP HL keys in the field are ready to support HASP SRM. You don't need to replace HASP HL keys. HASP HL keys in the field will require a !!!firmware upgrade!!! that provides more memory and a significantly higher level of protection. HASP SRM includes a simple upgrade utility that you can bundle with your software to effect the firmware upgrade.

You can maintain your legacy HASP HL protection simultaneously with the added protection and licensing capabilities of HASP SRM. This is possible because when the HASP HL key is updated to firmware v.3.21, the key is divided into two sectors, each of which functions as a separate key. The legacy key sector provides full HASP HL functionality. The HASP SRM key sector provides the advanced HASP SRM capabilities. When you combine HASP HL and HASP SRM functionality, the two separate key sectors require a dual process in the production phase and at the end-user site.

Is it really can update dongle's firmware?

Any comments?

I can speculate what you were thinking souz when you first saw this, the possibility that you could dig out the complete HASP-HL firmware and perhaps compromise it in some way.

However, as I understand it, HASP-HL is simply on-chip AES, all the secrecy being in the key which I'm very much doubting the firmware exposes any means to read out. Unlikely Aladdin have been this stupid a 2nd time.

Still, might be interesting to reverse it anyway.
