Dongle Security

hello guys i am new to dongles and i don't know where to start.

i have a usb that is identified as HID device , this USB used to be a 64GB storage device , but after one of my freinds did some encryption , it changed to this state.

i want to know how can i crack it or at least change it back to normall.

any help or roadmap would be appreciated. :)

Be careful with untrusted USB devices identified as HID.
This could be a variation of BadUSB attack — USB devices acting as keyboard and sending hidden keystrokes.

Storage device cannot magikally turn into dongle. :D
The usb storage drive just now got corrupted. It maybe or not maybe possible to format it at low level to turn it back into storage device.
You can also try to flash firmware from the usb device's website or contact support for the firmware.

thanks , i tried a bunch of softwares including low level formating , the problem no software can recognise the USB as storage device.

But some USB devices can be switched to HID mode.

The question is:
Why do you ignore specific replies in this tread?

sendersu asked you about your device, especially VID and PID, picture of your device, but you ignored his reply.

Did you try to check if you device in HID mode?

Based on your issue, you can solve the problem if you can get the firmware from the usb vendor and then flash it. They may tell you the steps also. Then it will use the correct driver after flash and start to behave like storage device again.

@Jupither I know that they can be switched to HID mode. He is saying that it was a pure storage device. A dongle is generally security device. His friend probably flashed it with wrong firmware so it now shows itself as some unknon HID device to pc.

thank you very much , i was just checking the PID and VID and found out that it could be flashed by ChipEasy v1.5 , i just wanted to test it out then reply.

As you mentioned VID/PID did indeed help me know the firmware and flash it by ChipEasy v1.5. Problem solved thank you very much. :)

i have one more question , you seem to have some experience in this field suppose that i did have a dongle and wanted to crack it , what are basic recons and analysis i should do and how can i proceed . (just for curiosity)

Good that you were able to solve your problem by flashing it back. If a usb device does not tell the OS what it is through a proper driver, the os recocognise it as a HID device in many cases. Proper firmware is a must.
