Hi. What version of Winamp is?

DARKER 09-26-2024 15:17

Latest, but winamp license violates github TOS:
  • No Distribution of Modified Versions: You may not distribute modified versions of the software, whether in source or binary form.
  • No Forking: You may not create, maintain, or distribute a forked version of the software.
  • Official Distribution: Only the maintainers of the official repository are allowed to distribute the software and its modifications.

Their codebase also violates a lot of various licenses of code they are using/stole. Multiple GPL (and other) violations throughout the codebase. An issue is tracking all of the things people are finding over time here:
Code:

If they are violating the GPL, someone should report those violations to the relevant copyright holders and get WinAmp smacked down for the violations.

Even after all the license drama, I still love that they open sourced it ;)

Winamp source code was made available from version 3.8 in September 2020.
The latest prior to this release was the v5.xx source code released in Dec 2023.

A good symbiosis by using DFX, and now open source too.

The owners of WinAmp have just deleted their entire repo one month after uploading the source code to GitHub.
The deletion happened soon after The Register enquired about the seeming inclusion of Shoutcast DNAS code and some Microsoft and Intel codecs.

The repository was taken down by Winamp, manually. There was no legal requirement to take it down such as with a DMCA or similar. Since GitHub did not have to force-remove it, none of the forks are removed so it's still publicly accessible in one of the countless forks that were made at this time. It is possible, though, at a later time that GitHub may receive a DMCA that will require them to take down all of the forks since the repo contains countless private sources, certs, and other material that was never meant to be released publicly. If you are interested in preserving the source, you should get it sooner than later from one of the many forks before it is potentially taken down legally.
