DRM crack ?

OK, So I downloaded a movie (.wmv format) and was ready to view it... But it was protected in someway. I discoved a system called DRM (Digital Rights Management) which I'm sure you will already know. It allows you to view the file only when you have a licence.

No problem, I thought. Practically every piece of software available has been cracked in someway, so I was confident I could find a crack that would unprotect my .wmv file.
But... no such luck. I only could find a utility called Freeme, which didn't work for me, since you need the licence file for it.

So my questions:
Why is it so hard to crack DRM? Is this finally a succesful invention from Microsoft? Or will it be cracked sometime and is it just a matter of time?

I believe that you can remove the digital rights management from a WMV only if you have been able to play the file already. If you have not been able to play the file at all, then you've not much hope into getting a viewable version.

Or at least that's how I understand it.

Hi,

I got some .WMA (Video), it requires to active and I have to be online mode, but when I am offline, those files can not be played. Do we have tool to remove DRM to watch in offline mode (wo/internet connection)?

MarcElBichon 12-20-2005 19:55

Yes there are some tools mainly by japanese.

GetAsfStream (h**p://tetora.orz.ne.jp/forum/gasdown/download.cgi) to download protect files
drmdbg (h**p://sky.advenbbs.net/bbs/yybbs.cgi?id=DRMdbg2005&page=0&bl=0) to unprotect

For english users, read a very long thread on Doom9.org (h**p://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=89243)

Thanks MarcElBichon replied, I also downloaded drmdbg. When I run it, it loads WMP automatictly, and I open my movied, it display some nag dialogs, but I do not know what it said. May you give me short instruction? Do I have to watch full movie time to unpack its protections? The page you gave me above is Japanese, so I could not understand what they discussed. Thanks anyway.

Thanks MarcElBichon once more times;-) I am seeing it, but I seems got crazy to follow that thread:-(

Quote:

Protected Content
Playback not allowed
Copy to CD not allowed
Copy to portable player not allowed
Copy to an SDMI-compliant portable player not allowed
Licence back up not allowed
That's why I could not watch them in offline mode. :(

let\'s make it short: the drm in media player uses 128bit encryption / symetrical cipher/; that means you need to guess 128bits in order to decode. The playback requires the so called license. Unless there\'s some weakness in lic generation scheme, this will be impossible to decode.

Ryohma 12-31-2005 23:08

main program is drm2wmv.
it's need sid & kid to decode.

drmdbg is tool to find sid.
if you have latest version,
nag says "sent sid to clipboard".

these tools made by lark,
and he made base64plugin to trace drm
