Driver Studio 3.1 + VMWare Workstation 4.0?

Hey all,

Has anybody tried installing Driver Studio 3.1 on VMWare Workstation 4.0? Did it work for you? What video settings do you use?

Thx!

Doesn't work with 98 vdisks

My first attempt was last night when trying to install
to a 98 vdisk.

Turns out 3.1 is 2000/XP only. The install reverts back to
2.7 if your running a 98 box.

So tonight I'll be trying it on a 2000 virtual disk and will
post the results.

Success... but...

Ok,

I do have Driver Studio SoftIce 3.1 running on a
Windows 2000 Pro with Service Pack 4 virtual machine.

I had a lot of trouble, ie: lockups, and finally found the
fix on vmware's support page.

It mentions adding a couple of lines to the config file
of the VM, and that is what worked for me.

Support page:
hxxp://frontline.compuware.com/nashua/kb/doc/1702.asp

I had no success with a 2k service pack 1 install.

Hi,
I've been trying to make it run few days, and found following; you shouldn't install vmware tools - mainly not the graphics driver. Also try different versions of sice and servicepacks - for example I managed to run Win2k SP2 and DS 2.6, but nothing else. So try and you'll see - tip: use snapshots and when anything doesn't run just revert to it.
Good luck,

Well I have been trying for the whole day yesterday to configure Visual Softice target on vmware and Visual Softice host on my machinebut it didn't work all too well.
My machine is displayed when I click on browse targets from driver workbench but when I click on make active, nothing is shown except an error message, 'something like unable to get ip current adress'
When I try to change the settings of the target or to configure true coverage, I get an other error message 'you do not have access permission to test" (test is my machine name.

Has anybody ever got visual softice working ? is there anything to do so as to allow acces to the machine ?

When are some of you folks going to figure out that the Diety invented search engines so you could find information, both here and on the net.

Again, a little careful searching, both here and on the net would lead you to:

a thread by WhoCares here, titled "VMWare Remote Debugging though Serial Port and Named Pipe" at:

http://www.exetools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3499

and the following article on the Woodman Forums, titled:
"VMWare & Softice - Experiences, problems and solutions" at

http://66.98.132.48/forum/showthread.php?t=5806

and that's just on these two Forums. There are undoubtedly more out there.

Of course I had first made a search on this forum and I had allready read those post but my question was mostly about Visual SoftIce and not Softice...

I wanted to debug my driver on vmware and 'remotely' accessing it with visual softice, because it seemed like the best way to get a nice and confy interface and there seemed to be some nice added features.

There is a vmware support article describing problems with running si in a vm:

Wait a minute Butter, you're not suggesting that perhaps zentis should have actually considered looking at the support pages for the programs he is trying to run, are you? That makes WAY too much sense.

Why next thing you know, someone might actually suggest he review the support pages on compuware's site also. NAH. Why try that or even a search engine when one can just ask someone else to do their research for them?

We are simply left to assume that zentis actually read the manual titled "Using Virtual Softice" available on the compuware site and that he actually read the "DriverStudio and SoftICE Driver Suite Installation Guide" and read everything on the VMWare site about using that product with SoftICE, because we have FAITH he wouldn't avoid that responsibility.

Well, thanks butter, but this is for this is for Softice and not Visual Softice,

Softice is a single machine debugger that can also work on two machines remotely while Visual Softice is a two machine only debugger that can only work remotely (like windbg).

The problem I had was trying to make driver Work bench (the host part of DriverStudio) connect to Visual Softice which was installed on my vmware machine but since I never could connect I abandonned.
Especially since there is no reference to Visual SoftIce in the support site of Vmware (only to softice) (nor where there any useful information on the Compuware support page).
And I did read all the parts about remote debugging in the different manuals provided with Driver Studio.

SoftIce on the other hand always ran fine (except that while I never had anyu prob to debug an app I can't get it to debug my driver but that's on another thread), it was just that I wanted to use Visual Softice to get a nice interface full of jumpy windows and not a dull text interface
