Olly freezing
 

Theres a spacific program i am trying to debug... I got it unpacked with an automated unpacker (aspr 1.2x) and partially cracked it so it would actually run in the unpacked state. The thing is, sometimes (75% of the time maybe) when i load it in to olly, start it with f9 and then pause it with f12, olly goes bonkers and freezes. I know the other program is supost to freeze because its paused, but why olly??
Its driving me nuts, I cant get anything done!

i have the same problem with such a aspr-program (postsmile), but it doesn't only freeze olly, it freezes the whole computer...

maybe you could try setting trace logging to log to file and
then hit trace into at the entrypoint... if youre lucky the file is there
when you reboot and you can see where your problems are caused...

Indeed the step 3 of Olly freezes several times. I have frezees casually, not being able to understand under which conditions, but for example it happens often when right click to open contextual menus..in step2 wasn't so frequent.. :confused: :confused:

does it crash too if you run it and then attach to it with olly?

i don't know about r3L4x' program (i think he has a very different problem) but postsmile crashes if you set a breakpoint, but only if you set deep in the code (if you set at start no problem). but how is it possible to crash the whole computer with this? it seems it is freezed, but if you press the standby button, it goes to standby-mode without problems. but you aren't able to click or use taskmanager or something else

ok heres the included app, its some kind of password program for sniffing out passwords, but its a trial version ;)
"Installer - aspr'd sfx.exe" acording to peid is a upxd self extracting archive, it extracts spdhook.dll and lpr.exe to the windows dir and adds startup. ldr is asprotected with version 1.2x and i found a manual unpacker for it.

Unpacked_Runs.exe is the stand alone exe from the extracted package and unpacked using caspr. I changed one offset when i was able to debug it - it had some kind of check sum thing that would say the program is expired, so i patched and it runs normaly. This just wont debug! All im doing is loading it into oly, waiting for it to finish disassembling and press f9, wait for it to load, and pressing f12. Then it freezes.
I just need to look at the call table to find the sub it uses to determine if its registered!
