You know the 'upgrade' version of XP?

Well, say you had bought 2 of them... but you used the same 98CD on both to prove that you had 98. Would activation catch this?

When you install it it asks for a 98 CD (to prove that you have 98). But the disc is in-fact a full XP Home install.

Don't want to buy it otherwise, and I'm not going to use a pirated corp ver.

I can't see how they would know you only had 1 copy of Win98 and activated 2 copies of XP Home with it as the Win98 CD you have would be identical to the same batch of Win98 CD's that got pressed, so if you had 1 Win98 CD you could theoretically activate endless copies of XP with that same Win98 CD!

The only way they would know was if the XP activation asked for the Win98 CD Key before activating, otherwise, how can it tell the Win98 CD you have has been used twice?

Technically you might have breached the EULA, but how they gonna know?

I don't believe that it is doing anything other than confirming that you actually "own" a Win98 disk before it commences the upgrade. I don't believe it does anything other than confirm the existence of the disk, since it is "upgrading" a Win98 OS already on your machine. I believe that the only significant issue is that you "activitated" two "seperate" upgrade copies of XP. That is what is checked and where you would get caught. Unless, of course, you have the XP keygen or circumvention program which is floating around.

No, you don't need to have 98 already on the machine. You can format the drive, and then during the XP install it asks for the 98 disc.

I "sit" corrected. :eek: It's actually been a long time since I upgraded to XP and I had previously upgraded to Win2000 and did the XP upgrade, although to Pro, actually starting from a newely formatted disk here also.

My only excuse is I'm old and I forgot. :D
