[Off Topic] Difference between ATX12V 2.0 and EPS12V power supply
 

I have a quite "off topic" question, but since it says "Discuss anything you want" in the forum description I'm posting it here.

Does anybody know what the difference between an ATX12V 2.0 and an EPS12V power supply is?

I want to upgrade my PC and get a new mainboard/CPU/graphic card. The mainboard requires an ATX12V 2.0 power supply. I currently have an EPS12V power supply and I'm usure if it will work with the new mainboard.

I downloaded the ATX and EPS standards and here's what I found out so far:

- The ATX12V 1.3 standard has a 20-pin main power connector and a 4-pin 12V CPU power connector.
- The ATX12V 2.0 standard has a 24-pin main power connector and a 4-pin 12V CPU power connector.
- The EPS12V 2.1 standard has a 24-pin main power connector and an 8-pin 12V CPU power connector.

My power supply comes with an EPS12V 24-pin main power connector, a 4-pin CPU power connector, a 8-pin CPU power connector and an adapter cable to transform the 24-pin connector to a 20-pin ATX 1.3 connector. So thanks to a 4-pin and an 8-pin CPU power connector my power supply will work with ATX12V 1.3 and EPS12V mainboards.

By comparing the ATX12V 2.0 and the EPS12V 2.1 standard I found out that the main power connector has the same pin assignment (expect that ATX calls 2 pins "+12V1" and EPS calls then "+12V2"). And I know that the ATX12V 2.0 power supplies also come with a 24-to-20-pin adapter to be compatible with old ATX12V 1.3 mainboards.

According to the EPS12V standard, section 6.1.1 it looks like "+12V1" and "+12V2" are something different (like which power strain the cable comes from), but I've no technical knowledge about that. And since the possibility to use an adapter to convert EPS12V to ATX12V 1.3 exists, I guess it is only an small or no difference.

Since I already have a good power supply and don't want to buy me an other one, my question is if anybody knows if it would make a difference using my existing power supply with my new mainboard.
