Well, it seems not too dangerous if one updates the antivirus/firewall manually. It's primary a concern if you use the automatic updates feature. I don't use it because most of the time i'm on a dialup conection and downloading 22Mb only for dotNet Framework doesn't made me happy

The hidden message: Never rely on too much automation or you will end up like in Terminator

As far as sp2 goes there are way too many bugs in it for me to even begin to mess with . I'll wait for quite a while before I even think of installing it.So far there's a couple hundred programs that will not run after you install it.That's progress?

Oh come on! I don't quite get the point about this "bug"! It seems to say that if you are running as an [B]admin[/B and if you get infected by some torjan, it can change the state of the security center! But excuse me! How silly is the whole thing? It has nothing to do with SP2, security center or even the windows itself! Using any operating system all the time with an admin user is all by itself a very big security risk and if you get infected by a torjan, then the author of that torjan should be very silly to only attack something so visible like the security center as gaining the administration rights lets it to do as much as it likes and there are far more interesting things to play with that the security center.

i wonder why many people are curious about using this after hearing all the bugs and problem this has....i wonder why people should do what microsoft want them to do...why Billy wants to make this new stuff when SP1 still has bug.. why not improving SP1 first .. i'll be using the buggy SP1 for a while and maybe will not change to this new crap.. this is just my opinion

It is strange that you don't realize that this IS the bug-fixes you've been waiting for! Take a look at this list to see what are these fixes: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;811113
(I could count 818 bugfixes listed and some of the are cumulative fixes: i.e. more than one patch in the package). Do you realize that this is the Service Pack 2, which is a cumulative, huge set of bug-fixes over the previous Service Pack (SP1a, actually)?
The things that holds some people back from installing SP2 is some possible incompatibilities with SHITTY programs (like some protection systems) that would like to do some strange things like executing code in stack which truely should be avioded. In my opinion it is plain wrong to not to install SP2 for such tiny reason (and guess what, those programs have no choice but to get updated anyway) against the huge security improvements SP2 can potentially have.
Personally, I have installed SP2 and all of the programs installed on my computer are working with NO problem at all, and I tell, I have hundreds of programs installed... (And no, I don't do SoftICE on my XP machine: I have a separate, old Win2K machine with full DriverStudio for that purpose).
So, what are you waiting for before installing SP2? Bug fixes for SP2? You mean SP3?? This whole thing has happened before, when SP1 was releazed and now is just being repeated again...

WARM3CH: don't get too upset if some people are resilient to changes. they may have "shitty" reasons for not upgrading, but usually they are valid reasons.

have u ever experienced crashing your system after a service pack installation, or crashing an important application after you've patched? have you ever experienced trying to rebuild a pc, or reinstalling one from scratch because of a service pack upgrade?

if you haven't, then lucky you... you can upgrade happily everytime there is a new release out there. but for some people, going through this again will be another nightmare i know they'll never ever want to experience again.

it's a delicate balance, or imbalance. some may change, others may not. but one thing that's not good, is to force something to somebody. it'll all work out... i hope

cable modems always show activity, you aren't just on your own segment you know, with a cable modem. Only DSL give you a true IP of your own.

And even if TCP/IP is locked, you can still have streams attempting to "get in", so hence network activity.

[EDIT JMI: Since a group of new users thought this was the perfect thread in which to post their personal opinions of XP2 to add to their post count, and all such comments had nothing to do with the subject of this Thread, I have deleted those and closed the Thread.]
