Like you said that sometimes the people that run the sites can add malware to the exe well sometimes, the person that created/distributed the crack does this aswell. Often they are undetected aswell regardless of how good your AV is.
What I do is because I am very cautious when it comes to downloading and executing files, I will submit it to an anti-virus company and then wait for there response. It might take a day or 2 but it is better safe than sorry, and you will know if the file is infected or not. That is my suggestion anyway
