Do we actually need to unistalled ?

Hi I am wondering if a new version of a software is available, do we need to uninstalled the old version before installing the new version. If the new version is installed and some problem occured can we reinstalled back the old version ( if the software of the old version is not available) how to save the old version file before installing the new one for it to reinstall back. Thanks.
