I saw this ages ago. Explanation is, that "rectangle" that comes out after rearranging pieces is not really a rectangle (diagonal is not a line, but consists of 2 lines). It can be proven by calculating internal angles. So actually the "diagonal" has an empty space with field = 1.

another way of explaining it -
(the board doesn't seem to allow [img] tags, so i made it an attachment, please refer to it.) in reality, the slopes of segment AB and BD are not the same, one is 2/5, other is 3/8, so ABCD is really a extremely narrow parallelogram, with the area of 1. cheap trick, but fools the average eye
