Best Way to Protect Harddrive Data?

I was wondering what is the most secure way to protect the data .ie. access to it on a windows xp box. Administrator passwords etc are useless simply because they can be overrided soo easily.

the next option of course would be encryption...However I want this machine to be a database server and I fear that encryption will prevent the database from being read. for eg. with pgp the file name is renamed with a .pg extension.

Does someone know of a package that will allow me to decrypt and encrypt on the fly. Also the feature of boot password and other security measures will be a plus for the package.

thank you for your help.

Try http:// www. securstar.com/products_drivecryptpp.php

Will encrypt your whole harddrive, it uses armadillo but was keygenned by dT a while ago.

I have tried this software but the keygen that came along with it (0day) didnot generate a valid license

TrueCrypt imho is better that DriveCrypt, since it is open source, so you can compile it yourself to be sure there is no holes in protection and undocumented features. It is also free and have well-documented protection mechanism for better understanding what you can get using it. But it is lack pre-boot auth and some other nice features...
Anyway give it a try: hxxp://www.truecrypt.org

Truecrypt is free and opensource, but it can't crypt the system partition etc.
I'm using DCPP for more than 2 years, and i'm very satisfied with it.
If you have a 200gb partition, you can encrypt/decrypt while you are working on it! Encryption doesn't format the disk like TC, and others.
And yes, dT keygen for DCPP 3.0 doesn't work.

if you don't want to encrypt the whole partition, try to use this software, it will encrypt data on the fly, and make a virtual drive, you can mount it by using it's password. and you can easily find keygen on the web.

here it is : h**p://www.strongdisk.com/

An alternative: Steganos Security Safe
http://www.steganos.de/?product=safe8&language=en&layout=web2005

I'm currently using version 6, because v. 7 slows down your explorer (in some cases), but you can give v. 8 a try.

regards...

I use for several years
Securstar's DriveCrypt and is a really good, fast and strong in encryption.
It's fast why i don't feel the difference between the real and the encrypted HD (and is onfly decrypted with a strong algo).

Now the latest versions released are:

DCPP (DriveCrypt Plus Pack) 3.0 and DriveCrypt 4.2

DCPP have a good Boot authentication .. only after this authentication the HD is decrypted.
Bye

TurboCrypt Disk Encryptor by PMC Ciphers, Inc. is a nice tool. $35 it costs. But only a nag is there. Fast operation, 512 bytes encryption......
