4chan, an anonymous forum founded in 2003, is known for its simple structure and controversial content. It allows users to post text and images anonymously in various discussion boards (e.g., /b/, /pol/, /a/) without registration. The platform has significantly influenced internet culture, spawning groups like Anonymous, movements like Gamergate and QAnon, and events like the celebrity photo leak (The Fappening).The hack unfolded when a previously shut-down board, /QA/, briefly came back online, displaying a message: "U GOT HACKED XD." Simultaneously, an account on a rival forum, Soyjak.party, shared screenshots allegedly showing 4chan’s backend systems and a list of moderators’ and administrators’ usernames with associated emails. After the emails were leaked, Soyjak.party users began doxxing, publishing personal photos and information of the exposed accounts.The breach reportedly occurred due to outdated software and lack of updates, with the hacker allegedly lurking in 4chan’s systems for a year.The hack is confirmed, and the site is currently inaccessible.Although the forum operates anonymously, it stored users’ IP addresses. The data leak could have serious consequences for admins and users. For instance, 4chan has previously been used to plan DDoS attacks. With the leaked database and sensitive information, law enforcement could now track those involved.Additionally, given the forum’s history of offensive, hateful, and racist posts—some from moderators—the exposure of identities behind these posts could lead to real-world threats or attacks against those responsible.
